Rascal Flatts' Scores A Hit With Bless the Broken Road

By Roberto Johnson

Feel-good songs have a way of making it through not only charts but our hearts as well. A mixture of a great lyric, wonderful melody and perfect vocals, a great feel-good song will instantly grab you the moment you listen to it and stay with you for a very long time. Rascal Flatts did this to me with their version of a 1994 classic called Bless the Broken Road.

When I first heard the song four years ago, it was during the finale of American Idol season 4. Carrie Underwood performed with a country music group called Rascal Flatts. The song they sang, although it was alien to my ears and only ran for more than a couple minutes, instantly perked my ear up. Whatever the reason was, I started to look for the song online.

Because of my admiration for Carrie Underwood, I downloaded a version of their performance. I started to listen to the song on regularly. During this time, the song, and the band was starting to grow on me. I then heard three different versions of the song. But no matter how fast or slow the interpretations were, it all had the same effect on me.

Bless the Broken Road was originally written in 1994 for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It was recorded by three more artists before Rascal Flatts made a huge hit out of the song.

The song was included in their 2005 album, Feels Like Today. Despite the fact that it has been around for quite a while, Rascal Flatts made it a sensation. It took the charts by storm. As a matter of fact, it stayed at the number one spot in the Hot Country Singles and Tracks for five weeks. It even won a Grammy for Best Country Song.

The song is packed with high quality lyrical content. Simple, straightforward lyrics plus wonderful musical accompaniment make the song a great listening experience. Add to that its inspiring message of not losing hope. It reassures you that there is something better at the end of a rough, tough, and broken road.

Yes, the lyrics are great and inspiring but I think the tempo of the song can be slowed down a bit to have a more emotional and powerful effect. Rascal Flatts' cover was mid-tempo, which is similar to the original version, and has a feel-good aura because of how Gary sang it.

Rascal Flatts' rendition was similar to the original version. It was mid-tempo. You can also hear a wonderful piano accompaniment that added to the effect of the superb arrangement. Gary LeVox was able to sing every note right and drop every word at the right spot. His vocals were relaxed and packed with emotions. He was on the right key. It was flawless. When the song builds up in the second verse to the chorus, you will really feel how strong the song was. This is enough of a reason for you to start listening to Rascal Flatts.
